Summer means more time spent enjoying your pool, but it also means more effort to keep it clean and clear. A sparkling pool invites relaxation and fun, but neglecting maintenance can quickly turn it into a murky, uninviting mess. Keeping your pool in top condition requires consistent care and smart habits. Here are five practical tips to help you maintain a clean and clear pool all summer long.

Regular Skimming and Cleaning

Debris like leaves, bugs, and dirt can quickly accumulate on the surface and bottom of your pool. Skimming your pool daily removes floating debris before it sinks and causes stains or clogs your filtration system. Use a long-handled skimmer net to reach all corners and edges.

In addition to skimming, brush the pool walls and floor weekly to prevent algae buildup. Focus on shaded areas and corners where algae tend to grow first. Vacuum the pool regularly to remove settled dirt and debris that brushing alone can’t reach.

Example: If you notice leaves collecting near the pool steps, spend extra time brushing and vacuuming that area to avoid discoloration.

Maintain Proper Water Chemistry

Balanced water chemistry is the foundation of a clear pool. Test your pool water at least twice a week using a reliable test kit. Key factors to monitor include:

  • pH level (ideal range: 7.2 to 7.6)

  • Chlorine level (3 to 5 ppm)

  • Alkalinity (80 to 120 ppm)

  • Calcium hardness (200 to 400 ppm)

Adjust chemicals as needed to keep these levels within the recommended ranges. Low chlorine allows bacteria and algae to grow, while high pH can cause cloudy water and skin irritation.

Tip: Add chlorine in the evening to reduce loss from sunlight and improve effectiveness.

Keep Your Filtration System Running Efficiently

Your pool’s filtration system is crucial for removing contaminants and circulating clean water. Run the filter daily for at least 8 to 12 hours during peak summer months. This helps catch dirt and debris before they settle.

Clean or backwash your filter regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A clogged filter reduces water flow and cleaning efficiency. Check the pump basket and skimmer baskets weekly and remove any trapped debris.

Example: If your pool water looks cloudy despite chemical balance, a dirty filter could be the cause. Cleaning it often restores clarity.

Monitor and Maintain Water Levels

Keeping the proper water level in your pool is essential for efficient circulation and filtration. If the water level is too low, the pump can run dry and cause damage. If it’s too high, the skimmer won’t work effectively, reducing its ability to remove debris.

Check your pool’s water level at least once a week, especially during hot summer months when evaporation is higher. Add water as needed to keep it around the midpoint of the skimmer opening.

Tip: After heavy rain, check and adjust your water level to prevent overflow and maintain proper chemical balance.

Prevent Algae Growth with Algaecide

Algae can turn your pool green and slippery quickly. Using an algaecide as a preventive measure helps keep algae at bay. Apply algaecide weekly or after heavy rain, which can introduce nutrients that feed algae.

Choose an algaecide compatible with your pool’s chemical system. Avoid overusing it, as excessive chemicals can cause foaming or irritation.

Example: If your pool is shaded or surrounded by trees, algae risk increases. Regular algaecide use in these conditions keeps your pool inviting.

Keeping your pool clean and clear during summer takes consistent effort but pays off with a refreshing, safe swimming environment. By skimming and cleaning regularly, balancing water chemistry, maintaining your filtration system, shocking the pool weekly, and preventing algae growth, you ensure your pool stays sparkling all season.
